2020's greatest breakout, Chainsaw Man carves out a new niche, with shonen-style battles but a seinen-style plotline that I would recommend for older teens or adults. Though it seems at first like typical action fare with added gore and raunch, over time it reveals its tender heart, in the form of protagonist Denji's coming of age. Between madcap, imaginative battle scenes and comedic arguments, we see Denji's first brushes with love and loss, right and wrong, and the tremendous burden of freedom. Five stars.

Denji was a small-time devil hunter just trying to survive in a harsh world. After being killed on a job, he is revived by his pet devil Pochita and becomes something new and dangerous—Chainsaw Man!
Denji’s a poor young man who’ll do anything for money, even hunting down devils with his pet devil Pochita. He’s a simple man with simple dreams, drowning under a mountain of debt.
