Sharks in the Time of Saviors (Large Print / Library Binding)
This is the story of the Filipino-Hawaiian Flores family. Life is a near constant struggle for Malia and Augie. But they have each other, their children Dean, Nainoa and Kaui, and the beautiful Big Island. They live surrounded by the gods and the splendor of Hawaii. With the collapse of the sugarcane industry and the declining financial condition of the family, the three children make their way to the mainland to attend university and to pursue lives there, not all happily. When tragedy revisits the family in Hawaii, they’re all forced to reevaluate their beliefs and what it means to be part of their family.
It’s hard to believe Sharks In The Time of Saviors is Kawai Strong Washburn’s first novel. It is so gorgeously written, the story and the characters are will stay with me for a long time. One of my favorites so far this year, I’ll be recommending this book to everyone.— Nick

“Sharks in the Time of Saviors is one of the best pieces of contemporary fiction I’ve had the pleasure to read. The fact that the book takes place in Hawaii makes it even more special. The author provides the reader with a unique ‘chicken skin’ experience. The book captures contemporary Hawaii’s history over the past 20+ years, including the socioeconomics of race and being Hawaiian, income disparity, housing issues, family issues, and the diaspora that affects so many families in Hawaii who are unable or unwilling to deal with the cost of living. Truly a master work of art.”
